In a thrilling double-overtime showdown on February 12, 2025, the No. 12 Texas Tech Red Raiders secured a 111-106 victory over the Arizona State Sun Devils in Lubbock, Texas.

The game was marked by intense competition, featuring 18 lead changes and exceptional performances from both teams.

Texas Tech’s forward, JT Toppin, delivered a career-defining performance, scoring a personal best of 41 points and grabbing 15 rebounds. Toppin was remarkably efficient, making 17 of his 22 field goal attempts. His contributions were pivotal in the overtime periods, where he added eight crucial points. A highlight moment occurred in the second overtime when Toppin executed a steal with 33 seconds remaining, followed by a dunk that gave the Red Raiders a three-point lead.

Supporting Toppin’s stellar play, Darrion Williams contributed 27 points, while Chance McMillian added 14 points. Kerwin Walton and Christian Anderson also made significant contributions, scoring 13 and 10 points respectively. The Red Raiders showcased impressive shooting accuracy, finishing the game with a 57.4% field goal percentage.

On the opposing side, Arizona State’s Adam Miller led his team with 22 points, shooting 10-of-17 from the field. Teammates Shawn Phillips Jr. and Alston Mason added 15 and 16 points respectively. The Sun Devils were equally formidable, achieving a 55.6% shooting accuracy.

The game’s intensity was evident from the outset, with both teams exchanging leads throughout regulation. In the final moments of the first overtime, a pivotal defensive play by Christian Anderson, who poked the ball loose from Alston Mason near midcourt, set up what appeared to be a game-winning fastbreak layup for Kerwin Walton. However, Shawn Phillips Jr. made a game-saving block, sending the contest into a second overtime.

This victory was particularly significant for Texas Tech, as it allowed them to avoid consecutive losses following a recent defeat to Arizona. The win improved their season record to 19-5 overall and 10-3 in Big 12 play. Head coach Grant McCasland praised his team’s resilience, stating, “Our guys showed tremendous heart tonight. JT [Toppin] was phenomenal, and everyone contributed in crucial moments.”

For Arizona State, the loss marked their fourth consecutive defeat, bringing their record to 12-12 overall and 3-10 in the Big 12. Despite the outcome, head coach Bobby Hurley commended his players’ effort, saying, “We fought hard against a top-tier team. Games like this show our potential, and we’ll build on this experience.”

The matchup not only highlighted individual brilliance but also underscored the competitive nature of college basketball. Fans were treated to a high-scoring, closely contested game that will be remembered as one of the season’s most exciting encounters.

Looking ahead, Texas Tech aims to maintain their momentum as they prepare for upcoming conference games, while Arizona State will seek to regroup and break their losing streak. Both teams have demonstrated the ability to compete at a high level, setting the stage for an intriguing remainder of the season.

In summary, the double-overtime clash between Texas Tech and Arizona State was a testament to the passion and unpredictability of college basketball. With standout performances, strategic plays, and unwavering determination from both teams, fans were left on the edge of their seats, witnessing a game that encapsulated the essence of the sport.
