The Ohio State Buckeyes have experienced a whirlwind of events following their triumphant national championship victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on January 20, 2025.

While the team basks in the glory of their first national title since 2014, they are simultaneously navigating significant transitions within their coaching staff and player roster.

Coaching Departures and Appointments

A notable development is the departure of defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who has accepted a position with Penn State. Knowles, instrumental in orchestrating the Buckeyes’ top-ranked defense during their championship run, has secured a three-year contract worth $3.1 million annually, making him the highest-paid defensive coordinator in college football. His tenure at Ohio State was marked by a defense that allowed an average of just 12.2 points per game, a key factor in their successful season.

In response to Knowles’ departure, Ohio State is actively seeking a replacement to maintain their defensive prowess. The coaching carousel has also seen former Buckeyes defensive coordinator Chris Ash take up the same role at Notre Dame. Ash, who previously led Ohio State’s defense to a national championship in 2014, brings a wealth of experience from both collegiate and NFL positions.

Player Transitions and NFL Prospects

The championship victory has propelled several Buckeyes into the national spotlight, significantly enhancing their NFL Draft prospects. Offensive lineman Donovan Jackson showcased remarkable versatility by switching positions to address team needs, a move that has elevated his draft stock, potentially placing him in the late first round. Quarterback Will Howard delivered stellar performances throughout the College Football Playoff, amassing impressive statistics and demonstrating leadership qualities that make him a potential Day 2 selection.

Defensively, safety Lathan Ransom distinguished himself with exceptional play, solidifying his status as an elite prospect and probable Day 2 pick. Linebacker Cody Simon emerged as a defensive leader, contributing significantly with notable statistics, positioning him as a potential early to mid-round selection. The dynamic running back duo of Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson each surpassed 1,000 rushing yards, establishing themselves among the top prospects at their position. Defensive end Jack Sawyer had a breakout season, culminating in standout performances during the playoff run, which have positioned him as a potential first-round pick.

Reflecting on the Championship Season

The Buckeyes’ championship journey was marked by resilience and determination. Despite a regular-season loss to Michigan, Ohio State’s dominant playoff performance, including victories over top-tier teams, culminated in a 34-23 win against Notre Dame in the national championship game. This victory not only secured their first national title since 2014 but also marked them as the first team to win both the four-team and 12-team playoff formats.

The celebration of this achievement was tempered by the recognition of impending changes. During a ceremony attended by 30,000 fans at Ohio Stadium, emotional speeches highlighted the team’s Ohio spirit and resilience. The event also acknowledged the transitions ahead, with reports of coaching departures and several players declaring for the NFL Draft. Nevertheless, the Buckeyes are poised for continued success, bolstered by incoming talent and key returning players for the next season.

As the Buckeyes navigate this period of change, the program remains focused on sustaining its legacy of excellence. The combination of a celebrated championship season and strategic adaptations positions Ohio State to remain a formidable force in college football.
