Ohio State offensive tackle Josh Simmons is making remarkable strides in his recovery from a torn patellar tendon, an injury he sustained in October 2024.

Despite the severity of the injury, Simmons is reportedly “way ahead of schedule” in his rehabilitation process, a development that has bolstered his prospects for the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.

A Promising Start Cut Short

Simmons transferred to Ohio State in 2023 after two seasons at San Diego State, where he started 13 games at right tackle in 2022. Upon joining the Buckeyes, he seamlessly transitioned to the left tackle position, quickly establishing himself as a cornerstone of Ohio State’s offensive line. His performance garnered attention from NFL scouts, positioning him as a potential high first-round pick.

However, during a game against Oregon on October 12, 2024, Simmons suffered a torn patellar tendon in his left knee, abruptly ending his season. The injury was a significant setback, as the patellar tendon plays a crucial role in knee extension and overall mobility. Recovery from such an injury typically ranges from six to twelve months, depending on various factors, including the severity of the tear and the individual’s adherence to rehabilitation protocols.

Accelerated Rehabilitation and Draft Declaration

Despite the daunting prognosis, Simmons has demonstrated exceptional resilience and dedication to his recovery. Under the guidance of his medical team, he has engaged in an intensive rehabilitation program aimed at restoring strength and functionality to his knee. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has been vocal about Simmons’ progress, stating that he is “already ahead of schedule” and is expected to be fully cleared for practice by the start of NFL training camp.

Buoyed by his rapid recovery, Simmons announced in December 2024 his intention to enter the 2025 NFL Draft. This decision underscores his confidence in returning to peak physical condition and his readiness to compete at the professional level. Rosenhaus expressed optimism about Simmons’ draft prospects, asserting that he will be a high first-round pick.

The Impact of Transferring to Ohio State

Simmons’ journey to Ohio State began in 2023 when he transferred from San Diego State. His decision was heavily influenced by the Buckeyes’ esteemed coaching staff and the opportunity to compete at a higher level. Simmons believed that the environment at Ohio State would facilitate his development and enhance his prospects for a professional career.

Reflecting on his time with the Buckeyes, Simmons has expressed immense satisfaction with his choice to transfer. He credits the coaching staff for their unwavering support, particularly during his rehabilitation process. The resources and expertise available at Ohio State have played a pivotal role in his accelerated recovery, reinforcing his belief that transferring was the right decision.

NFL Prospects Amid Recovery

As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, teams are closely monitoring Simmons’ rehabilitation. Prior to his injury, he was lauded for his athleticism, technical proficiency, and versatility on the offensive line. Standing at 6’5″ and weighing 310 pounds, Simmons possesses the physical attributes desirable in an NFL tackle.

While injuries can impact a player’s draft stock, Simmons’ expedited recovery and the positive reports from his medical team have alleviated some concerns. Teams in need of offensive line reinforcement may view him as a valuable asset, capable of making an immediate impact once fully healthy.

Conclusion

Josh Simmons’ journey over the past year has been a testament to his resilience, work ethic, and strategic decision-making. His accelerated recovery from a torn patellar tendon, coupled with his affirmation of transferring to Ohio State, highlights his commitment to overcoming adversity and achieving his professional aspirations. As he continues to progress, the football community remains eager to witness his transition to the NFL and the contributions he will undoubtedly make on the field.
