In the 2024-25 college football season, Ohio State’s offensive lineman Donovan Jackson made a pivotal transition that not only showcased his versatility but also played a crucial role in the Buckeyes’ successful campaign.

Originally anchoring the left guard position, Jackson’s unexpected move to left tackle mid-season became a defining moment for both him and the team.

The Catalyst for Change

The Buckeyes’ offensive line faced a significant challenge when starting left tackle Josh Simmons suffered a season-ending injury during the Week 7 matchup against the Oregon Ducks. This unforeseen setback left head coach Ryan Day with a pressing dilemma: who could fill the void at such a critical position? After evaluating the roster, the decision was made to shift Donovan Jackson from left guard to left tackle—a position he had never started in during his collegiate career.

A Trial by Fire

Jackson’s inaugural start at left tackle came against the formidable Penn State Nittany Lions, pitting him directly against Abdul Carter, a projected top-five pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. The challenge was immense, and Jackson faced early hurdles, conceding two sacks in a narrow 20-13 victory. Despite these initial setbacks, his resilience and adaptability were evident.

Rapid Adaptation and Mastery

Following the Penn State game, Jackson’s performance at left tackle improved dramatically. Over the next eight games, he did not allow a single sack and permitted only three quarterback hits. His pass-blocking efficiency became a cornerstone of the Buckeyes’ offense, providing quarterback Will Howard with the protection needed to execute plays effectively.

Playoff Prowess

As Ohio State advanced to the College Football Playoffs, Jackson elevated his game further. In four playoff games, he allowed just two quarterback hurries and pressures, boasting an average Pro Football Focus pass-blocking grade of 83.6. His stellar performance was instrumental in the Buckeyes securing the National Championship with a 34-23 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Accolades and NFL Prospects

Jackson’s seamless transition and exceptional play did not go unnoticed. Former NFL scout and Executive Director of the Reese’s Senior Bowl, Jim Nagy, lauded Jackson’s contributions, stating, “What he did kicking out from LG to LT after Josh Simmons went down might be the most impressive thing we’ve seen from any draft-eligible OL prospect this year.” Such high praise has bolstered Jackson’s draft stock, with projections placing him as a late first-round or early second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Personal Reflections and Team Dynamics

Reflecting on his journey, Jackson admitted that his initial foray into the left tackle position was daunting. He described his debut against Penn State as a baptism by fire but emphasized the support from his coaches and teammates in facilitating his rapid development. Jackson’s willingness to embrace this new role underscored his team-first mentality and commitment to the Buckeyes’ success.

A Testament to Versatility and Determination

Donovan Jackson’s mid-season shift from left guard to left tackle stands as a testament to his versatility, athleticism, and determination. His ability to adapt under pressure and excel in a new position was pivotal in Ohio State’s championship run. As the Buckeyes look ahead, Jackson’s legacy serves as an inspiring example of stepping up when the team needs it most, turning potential adversity into a defining triumph.
