In the 2024 college football season, Brigham Young University’s (BYU) wide receiver and return specialist, Keelan Marion, delivered standout performances that not only electrified fans but also solidified his place among the nation’s elite players.

His remarkable kickoff returns against Wyoming and Utah were pivotal in securing victories for the Cougars and showcased his exceptional athleticism and game-changing abilities.

A 100-Yard Spark Against Wyoming

On September 14, 2024, during a matchup against former Mountain West rival Wyoming, Marion provided a much-needed boost for BYU. Leading 17-7 at halftime, the Cougars were seeking momentum to extend their lead. Marion answered the call by returning the opening kickoff of the second half 100 yards for a touchdown. This feat marked BYU’s first kickoff return touchdown since 2014 and the first on the road since 1998. Marion’s explosive return played a crucial role in propelling the Cougars to a 34-14 victory, improving their record to 3-0 for the second consecutive season.

Reflecting on the play, Marion credited his teammates and coaching staff for their support. He acknowledged a previous misstep on an earlier return and expressed gratitude for the encouragement he received at halftime. “I was a little down at halftime and Kalani [Sitake] came up and told me, ‘Key, hit it and trust it!'” Marion recalled. This confidence boost led to his remarkable second-half kickoff return, which not only energized the team but also silenced critics who had questioned his decision-making on returns.

Silencing the Utah Crowd with a 96-Yard Return

Marion’s impact was further cemented on November 9, 2024, in a heated rivalry game against the University of Utah. With BYU trailing 21-10 at halftime, Marion delivered a stunning 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open the second half. This play not only shifted the momentum in favor of the Cougars but also played a pivotal role in their narrow 22-21 victory, ending a long-standing losing streak at Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Marion’s ability to perform under pressure and deliver in critical moments showcased his resilience and playmaking skills. His performance against Utah was a testament to his dedication and the trust placed in him by the coaching staff and teammates.

Accolades and Future Prospects

Marion’s exceptional performances did not go unnoticed. He was named a first-team All-American for kickoff returns and earned second-team All-Big 12 honors for the 2024 season. His contributions extended beyond special teams, as he also recorded 23 receptions for 340 yards, along with one receiving touchdown and two rushing touchdowns.

Looking ahead, Marion has expressed his intention to return to BYU for his final season of eligibility. With the departure of fellow receivers Darius Lassiter and Kody Epps, Marion is poised to take on a leadership role within the team’s receiving corps. His experience and playmaking ability will be invaluable assets as the Cougars aim to build on their successes and compete at the highest level in the upcoming season.

Conclusion

Keelan Marion’s 2024 season was marked by game-changing plays that not only led BYU to significant victories but also earned him national recognition. His kickoff returns against Wyoming and Utah were emblematic of his explosive talent and ability to rise to the occasion in critical moments. As he prepares for his final collegiate season, Marion’s contributions will undoubtedly be instrumental in BYU’s pursuit of excellence on the football field.
