The New York Rangers made a low-key but potentially impactful move this offseason by bringing in forward Conor Sheary. While he might not be the most high-profile name in the NHL, Sheary brings a wealth of experience, versatility, and a championship pedigree that could prove invaluable for a Rangers team looking to contend in a fiercely competitive Eastern Conference.

Here’s what Rangers fans need to know about their new forward:

A Proven Winner

One of the most attractive aspects of Conor Sheary’s resume is his winning pedigree. The 31-year-old forward was a key part of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ back-to-back Stanley Cup victories in 2016 and 2017. He logged significant minutes alongside Sidney Crosby during those runs, showcasing an ability to play with elite talent while performing under postseason pressure.

Sheary tallied 10 points in 23 playoff games during the 2016 championship run and contributed again in 2017, solidifying his reputation as a capable depth contributor in the postseason. With the Rangers hoping to make another deep playoff run, his experience could help guide some of the younger players on the roster.

Career Snapshot

Conor Sheary entered the NHL as an undrafted free agent, signing with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization in 2014. He quickly worked his way up from the AHL to the NHL and made an impact almost immediately. His best statistical season came in 2016-17, when he scored 23 goals and added 30 assists for 53 points in 61 games while playing on Crosby’s wing.

Since then, Sheary has played for several teams, including the Buffalo Sabres, Washington Capitals, and a brief return to Pittsburgh. In total, he’s played over 500 NHL games and has surpassed 100 career goals. Though he’s never been a star player, Sheary has consistently contributed wherever he’s gone.

Last season with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Sheary registered just 15 points in 57 games, one of the lowest totals of his career. However, a combination of reduced ice time and injury issues contributed to that decline. The Rangers are hoping that in the right role, he can bounce back and provide more consistent offensive production.

Versatility and Speed

Sheary is known for his versatility — one of the key traits that likely appealed to the Rangers’ front office. He can play both wings and slide up or down the lineup as needed. While he doesn’t bring elite size (5-foot-8, 179 pounds), he compensates with high hockey IQ, quick decision-making, and excellent skating.

His speed allows him to be effective on the forecheck and in transition, making him a good fit for coach Peter Laviolette’s system, which places an emphasis on pace and structured puck pursuit. Whether Sheary lines up on the third or fourth line, or is called upon to fill in on a top-six role due to injury, he has the tools to adapt.

What Role Will He Play?

The Rangers’ forward depth has been a point of scrutiny in recent seasons, particularly when it comes to secondary scoring. With top-six roles likely locked in for stars like Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider, and Mika Zibanejad, Sheary will most likely slot in on the third or fourth line.

That’s not to say his contributions won’t matter. The Rangers’ bottom six needs to be more than just defensively responsible — they need to chip in offensively and sustain pressure during their shifts. Sheary has shown he can do just that, especially when paired with line-mates who complement his skillset.

There’s also the possibility of Sheary seeing time on the penalty kill or second power-play unit, areas where he’s been used effectively in the past. His ability to read plays and make smart decisions with the puck gives Laviolette another reliable option.

Leadership and Locker Room Presence

Beyond his on-ice contributions, Sheary is also regarded as a strong presence in the locker room. He’s known for his work ethic, professionalism, and team-first attitude — qualities that go a long way over the course of a grueling 82-game season.

The Rangers already boast a solid leadership group, but adding a two-time Stanley Cup champion who’s been through the ups and downs of NHL life adds a valuable dimension. For younger players like Will Cuylle, Brennan Othmann, and potentially Gabriel Perreault, having a veteran like Sheary around can offer mentorship and a steady influence.

A Low-Risk, High-Reward Signing

Financially, the move to sign Sheary is a low-risk one for the Rangers. He comes in on a modest contract, which gives the team flexibility as they navigate the salary cap and potential mid-season additions. If he produces, it’s a bargain. If not, the Rangers haven’t committed significant cap space or term to the deal.

This type of move — bringing in an experienced veteran on a team-friendly deal — has become increasingly common among contenders looking to shore up depth. Sheary won’t be expected to carry the offense, but if he can chip in 10-15 goals and play responsible hockey, he’ll have more than earned his keep.

Final Thoughts

While Conor Sheary may not generate the same buzz as other big-name signings, his addition could pay dividends for the Rangers. He brings experience, speed, versatility, and a winning mentality — all of which could make a difference during the long grind of the NHL season and into the playoffs.

Fans should temper expectations in terms of production, but appreciate the value of what Sheary brings to the table. As the Rangers continue to shape their identity as a balanced, playoff-ready team, Sheary’s presence could help bridge the gap between talent and execution. If all goes according to plan, his name may not just be one fans recognize — but one they

’re thankful to have when the stakes are highest.
