In a surprise move that has Seminole Nation buzzing, former FSU softball legend Sydney Sherrill has flipped her coaching commitment from Georgia Tech to Florida State, returning to her alma mater as the new infield coordinator and assistant hitting coach.
Just weeks ago, Sherrill had accepted a position with Georgia Tech’s staff, expected to bring her signature intensity and field IQ to the Yellow Jackets. But after what sources close to the program described as “deep reflection and a heartfelt conversation” with Florida State head coach Lonni Alameda, the three-time All-American made the decision to return to Tallahassee.
“This is where my story began,” Sherrill said in a statement released by the university. “Florida State is more than just a school—it’s family. When the opportunity came to come back and help lead the next generation of Seminole greats, it wasn’t a decision I could pass up.”
Sherrill, one of the most decorated players in FSU history, was a cornerstone of the Seminoles’ 2018 national championship run. She remains the program’s all-time leader in doubles and was known for her fiery leadership and elite glove at third base.
Coach Alameda welcomed Sherrill’s return with open arms.
“Sydney has always been a coach on the field,” Alameda said. “Now she gets to bring that passion into the dugout full-time. Her energy, her knowledge, and her love for FSU are exactly what this program thrives on.”
The coaching flip has already sent waves through the college softball world and reignited excitement among FSU fans. Many took to social media to celebrate the homecoming of a fan favorite.
Sherrill replaces former assistant coach Kevin Mott, who recently took a head coaching job in the Midwest. Her focus will be on infield development and offensive strategy, areas where she excelled during her playing days.
“This is about giving back,” Sherrill said. “I was mentored by some of the best. Now it’s my turn to pour into these young women and help them chase greatness the same way I did.”
With Sydney Sherrill back in the Garnet and Gold, the message is clear: Once a Nole, always a Nole.
