The trailer for Spinal Tap II: The End Continues has officially been released, promising a raucous reunion filled with laughs, nostalgia, and a few surprise A-list appearances. Among the most jaw-dropping cameos in the teaser are music icons Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Questlove, each appearing to pay homage to the fictional heavy metal trio that first captured hearts—and funny bones—in the original 1984 cult classic This Is Spinal Tap.
Directed once again by Rob Reiner, who reprises his role as filmmaker Marty DiBergi, Spinal Tap II picks up decades after the band’s infamous rise and fall. The trailer teases a world where the bandmates—David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest), and Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer)—have long since drifted apart. However, the death of their former manager Ian Faith (a nod to actor Tony Hendra, who passed away in 2021) sets the stage for one final, chaotic reunion.
From the opening moments, the trailer strikes a familiar tone—dry, absurd, and hilariously self-serious. DiBergi, in his signature monotone narration, introduces the band’s history with deadpan gravity: “Some bands write music. Some change the world. Spinal Tap did both… by accident.”
As the band attempts to come together for one last concert in honor of Faith, the trailer hints at plenty of classic Tap mishaps: confusing stage entrances, exploding amps, and an increasingly convoluted concept album that no one seems to understand. McKean, Guest, and Shearer slide effortlessly back into their roles, their chemistry as potent and ridiculous as ever.
But it’s the cameos that have fans buzzing. Paul McCartney appears in a talking-head interview, earnestly recounting the first time he saw Spinal Tap perform. “I thought they were serious,” he admits. “Then the amplifier exploded and I thought, ‘Oh… maybe not.’” Elton John, decked out in full glam-rock regalia, laughs about sharing a stage with them at a fictional charity concert in the late ’80s. “They were dreadful,” he chuckles, “but unforgettable.”

Reiner, speaking at a press event earlier this year, shared why now was the right time for a sequel. “We always joked about doing a follow-up, but the timing never felt right,” he explained. “Then the anniversary came around, and we thought—why not bring them back one more time? Despite the nearly four-decade gap, the team behind the film assures fans that the sequel will stay true to its roots. “No CGI, no big studio polish,” Guest told Rolling Stone. “Just three middle-aged idiots with guitars, arguing about who gets the solo.”
Indeed, the trailer captures that low-budget charm. One scene shows the band rehearsing in what appears to be a garage in rural England, arguing about tempo while a neighbor complains about the noise. Another has Derek Smalls testing out a new bass guitar shaped like a medieval battle axe, only to accidentally smash a hole in the wall.
In a surprising twist, the film also includes a subplot involving a fictional streaming service called “Flanger+,” which finances the reunion concert in exchange for exclusive broadcast rights. The band, naturally, misunderstands the contract and believes they’re signing up for a luxury cruise.
The trailer ends with a triumphant shot of the band walking onstage—now grayer, slower, but still rocking. In true Spinal Tap fashion, one final disaster looms: the giant inflatable Stonehenge monument appears to collapse mid-set.
Early fan reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the decision to keep the original cast intact and the humor grounded in the same deadpan absurdity that made the original a classic. “This looks like exactly what we need right now,” wrote one fan on social media. “Tap is eternal.”
