The New Orleans Saints have secured a key piece of their defensive puzzle by re-signing former Ohio State star Chase Young to a three-year, $51 million contract.

The deal, which includes incentives that could push its value to $57 million, solidifies Young’s place as a cornerstone of the Saints’ defense for the foreseeable future. After bouncing between teams and overcoming injury setbacks, Young is now set to thrive in a system that fully utilizes his pass-rushing abilities.

From College Star to NFL Standout

Chase Young first made his name at Ohio State, where he dominated college football as one of the most feared defensive players in the country. As a junior in 2019, he racked up 16.5 sacks and was a Heisman Trophy finalist—a rarity for a defensive player. His dominance led to him being selected second overall by the Washington Commanders in the 2020 NFL Draft, where he immediately made an impact.

Early NFL Success and Injury Setbacks

Young’s rookie season in Washington was nothing short of spectacular. He recorded 7.5 sacks, forced four fumbles, and even returned one for a touchdown, earning him the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award. Washington fans believed they had found their next great pass-rusher.

However, in 2021, Young suffered a torn ACL that derailed his career for the next two seasons. He missed most of the 2022 campaign and struggled to regain his form in 2023. With Washington moving in a different direction, Young was traded to the San Francisco 49ers midway through the 2023 season, reuniting with his former Ohio State teammate Nick Bosa.

A Key Contributor in San Francisco

Despite playing a rotational role on the 49ers’ already elite defensive front, Young managed to contribute with 2.5 sacks in the regular season and one in the Super Bowl. His presence added depth to the 49ers’ pass rush, and he helped them reach the biggest stage. However, with San Francisco prioritizing other players in free agency, Young hit the open market, leading to his one-year, $13 million deal with the Saints in 2024.

A Resurgence in New Orleans

Young’s time in New Orleans proved to be a turning point in his career. Playing in a 3-4 defensive scheme under new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, Young thrived, playing all 17 games for the first time since his rookie year. He recorded 5.5 sacks, 34 quarterback pressures, and 21 quarterback hits, proving he could still be a disruptive force.

The Saints’ defense, which had been struggling to generate a consistent pass rush in previous years, benefited greatly from Young’s presence. His ability to collapse the pocket and create pressure helped the team remain competitive in the NFC South.

A Long-Term Investment

With his strong performance in 2024, the Saints made it a priority to keep Young in New Orleans. His new three-year, $51 million contract ensures that he will be a centerpiece of their defense moving forward. The deal also includes performance-based incentives that could push it to $57 million, rewarding Young if he continues to perform at a high level.

By securing Young for the long term, the Saints are betting that he can return to his dominant form. At just 25 years old, he still has plenty of upside, and his combination of size, speed, and technique makes him a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks.

Looking Ahead

With Young locked in, the Saints’ defense is shaping up to be one of the more formidable units in the NFC. If he can stay healthy and build upon his 2024 success, this contract could prove to be a bargain.

Young’s journey from top draft pick to overcoming adversity and earning a major payday is a testament to his resilience. Now, with a stable home in New Orleans, he has the opportunity to re-establish himself as one of the premier pass-rushers in the NFL. Saints fans have plenty to be excited about as Chase Young looks to dominate for years to come.
