The Detroit Red Wings have taken another confident step in their rebuilding efforts, signing promising defenseman Carter Bear to a three-year, entry-level contract. While the ink on the deal is still fresh, Bear made it clear in his first comments as a professional that this contract is just the beginning.
“It’s just a start,” Bear told reporters. “I know this deal is important, but I’m here to work, earn my spot, and grow every single day.”
At just 20 years old, Bear has already shown maturity beyond his years, both on and off the ice. Known for his calm presence, two-way play, and leadership qualities, Bear has long been on the radar of NHL scouts. Detroit selecting him was no surprise to many within the hockey world. Now, with this official contract in place, the real work begins.
A Rising Prospect
Bear spent last season playing for the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL, where he tallied 38 points (7 goals, 31 assists) in 64 games while anchoring the team’s blue line. Scouts praised his decision-making, breakout passing, and ability to kill penalties. His game isn’t flashy, but it’s consistent—something the Red Wings organization values highly.
“He’s a modern defenseman,” said Red Wings Assistant GM Kris Draper. “He moves well, can transition the puck, and takes pride in his defensive game. He’s the type of player who doesn’t need to score to have a big impact.”
Bear, a British Columbia native, was selected in the 2023 NHL Draft by Detroit in the third round (75th overall). Since then, his development has followed a steady, encouraging path. The Red Wings’ staff have kept a close eye on him, with player development coaches noting Bear’s growth in hockey IQ and physical maturity.
Detroit’s Long-Term Vision
For Detroit, Bear’s signing represents another building block in GM Steve Yzerman’s long-term vision for the team. The franchise has been methodical in rebuilding through the draft and development, with young players like Moritz Seider, Simon Edvinsson, and Lucas Raymond already establishing themselves in the NHL.
“Bringing in a player like Bear shows we’re continuing to add depth and competition on the back end,” Yzerman said in a team release. “He’s earned this opportunity and we believe he’s only going to get better.”
Bear is expected to begin his professional journey with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit’s AHL affiliate. There, he’ll have the chance to adapt to the pace of the pro game and work closely with the development staff.
“He’s got all the tools,” said Griffins head coach Dan Watson. “We’ll help refine his game and make sure he’s ready when the time comes.”
Humble, Focused, and Hungry
In conversations with media and teammates, Bear comes across as humble and laser-focused. He credits his family, coaches, and teammates for helping him reach this point, but he’s not allowing himself to get too comfortable.
“I know signing the contract is one thing, but earning ice time and eventually cracking the NHL roster is another,” Bear said. “I’m prepared to earn everything.”
That attitude has resonated throughout the Red Wings organization. Character and work ethic are pillars of Yzerman’s team-building philosophy, and Bear checks those boxes emphatically.
“I’ve always respected players who don’t take anything for granted,” said Seider, a fellow defenseman and one of Detroit’s young leaders. “From what I’ve seen, Carter’s that kind of guy.”
Learning from the Best
Bear will have no shortage of role models in Detroit. Between Seider, Ben Chiarot, Jeff Petry, and other veterans, there’s a wealth of experience to draw from. The organization plans to pair Bear with a mentor in Grand Rapids, helping him transition smoothly both on and off the ice.
“I’m just going to keep learning,” Bear said. “Whether that’s from watching game film, asking questions in the locker room, or putting in extra time after practice—whatever it takes.”
He’s also expressed admiration for Seider’s journey from top prospect to NHL regular.
“Seeing what Moritz has done is inspiring,” Bear said. “I want to follow that path, even if it takes time.”
Community and Culture Fit
Aside from his talent, Bear is known as someone who thrives in a strong team culture. Coaches describe him as a player who leads by example and brings positive energy to the locker room.
“Carter is a glue guy,” said his former junior coach Chris Lazary. “He makes everyone around him better, and not just by how he plays, but how he carries himself.”
The Red Wings, with their strong emphasis on character and leadership, saw that same quality in him. It’s part of why they were eager to get his name on a contract before training camp.
Looking Ahead
While the NHL dream is still a step away, Bear’s journey is one to watch closely. His development in Grand Rapids will be closely monitored, and if he continues to progress at his current rate, a call-up could come sooner than expected.
“There’s no pressure from the organization,” Bear said. “They’ve told me to take my time and do it the right way. That’s exactly what I plan to do.”
As for goals in the short term?
“Get stronger, get faster, and help the Griffins win hockey games,” Bear said with a smile. “That’s where my head is at.”
