The Ohio State Buckeyes community is mourning the loss of former quarterback and team captain Jim Karsatos, who passed away on February 8, 2025, at the age of 61 due to a heart condition.

Early Life and High School Achievements

Born on May 26, 1963, in Fullerton, California, Karsatos attended Sunny Hills High School, where he showcased exceptional talent as a quarterback. During his senior year in 1980, he completed 188 of 316 passes for 2,825 yards and 23 touchdowns, earning him the title of Orange County “Player of the Year.” His high school career totals included 4,426 passing yards and 40 touchdowns.

Collegiate Career at Ohio State

Karsatos enrolled at Ohio State University in the winter of 1982 after recovering from a knee injury that required surgery. He redshirted his first year and served as a backup to Mike Tomczak in 1983 and 1984. In 1985, he became the starting quarterback, leading the Buckeyes with impressive statistics:

1985 Season: Completed 158 of 254 passes (62.2%) for 2,115 yards, 19 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. Notably, in his final start of the year, he connected with receiver Cris Carter on a play that remains one of the most memorable in Ohio State history.

1986 Season: As a team captain, Karsatos completed 135 of 251 passes (53.8%) for 1,927 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He concluded his collegiate career with totals of 330 completions on 573 attempts for 4,698 yards, 36 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions.

Professional Pursuits

The Miami Dolphins selected Karsatos in the 12th round (322nd overall) of the 1987 NFL Draft. He spent three years with the Dolphins but did not appear in a regular-season game.

Post-Football Career

After retiring from professional football, Karsatos transitioned into the financial sector. He founded the Karsatos Financial Network in 2003, following roles at the Ohio Company brokerage and as a manager with the Columbus agency of John Hancock. His firm provided financial advisory services in Central Ohio.

Legacy and Impact

Karsatos is remembered not only for his on-field achievements but also for his leadership and contributions to the Ohio State community. His journey from a high school standout in California to a celebrated quarterback and captain of the Buckeyes exemplifies dedication and resilience. His post-football endeavors further highlight his commitment to excellence and service.

As the Ohio State community reflects on Karsatos’s life and legacy, his impact on the program and those who knew him remains profound. His story serves as an inspiration to current and future Buckeyes, illustrating the enduring values of hard work, leadership, and perseverance.
