In a strategic move to enhance its football program, the University of Nebraska has significantly increased its coaching staff’s salaries for the 2025 season.

Despite this financial commitment, the Cornhuskers’ compensation packages still trail behind those of top Big Ten rivals, notably the University of Iowa.

Nebraska’s Investment in Coaching Talent

Head coach Matt Rhule, entering his third season with Nebraska, leads the staff with a substantial contract. In 2023, Rhule signed an eight-year, $74 million deal, ensuring long-term stability for the program. This contract includes a significant buyout clause, with an estimated $55 million required if Rhule were to be dismissed ahead of the 2025 season.

The university has also focused on retaining key assistant coaches. Running backs coach E.J. Barthel received a notable extension, securing his position through January 31, 2027, with an annual salary of $450,000. This marks a significant increase from his previous $293,000 salary, reflecting the university’s commitment to maintaining coaching consistency.

Defensive coordinator Tony White stands as the highest-paid assistant on Rhule’s staff, earning $1.6 million annually after a contract renegotiation in December 2024. Offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield follows with a $1.4 million salary. The total compensation for the 10 assistant coaches amounts to approximately $6.78 million, slightly below the $7 million budget allocated by Athletic Director Trev Alberts.

Comparisons Within the Big Ten Conference

While Nebraska’s financial commitment to its coaching staff is substantial, it remains modest compared to some Big Ten counterparts. Ohio State’s head coach, Ryan Day, for instance, secured a three-year contract extension in 2025, elevating his annual earnings to $9.5 million. Similarly, Penn State’s James Franklin signed a 10-year contract in November 2024, with an annual salary of $7 million, potentially reaching up to $85 million with additional guarantees.

In contrast, specific salary details for the University of Iowa’s coaching staff are not readily available from the provided sources. However, it’s evident that Nebraska’s coaching salaries are competitive yet still lag behind the top-tier programs within the conference.

Strategic Implications for Nebraska

Nebraska’s decision to invest heavily in its coaching staff underscores a strategic effort to elevate the football program’s performance and competitiveness within the Big Ten. By securing experienced and skilled coaches through lucrative contracts, the university aims to foster a stable and effective coaching environment.

However, the financial disparities between Nebraska and leading programs like Ohio State and Penn State highlight the challenges faced in attracting and retaining top coaching talent. To bridge this gap, Nebraska may need to explore additional revenue streams, such as enhanced fundraising efforts, increased ticket sales, and potential partnerships, to bolster its financial resources dedicated to athletics.

In conclusion, while Nebraska has made commendable strides in enhancing its football coaching staff’s compensation, aligning with the upper echelon of the Big Ten will require sustained financial commitment and strategic resource management. The university’s proactive approach serves as a foundation for future growth, aiming to elevate the Cornhuskers’ stature within collegiate football.
