In the 2024–25 NCAA men’s basketball season, the Texas Tech Red Raiders, under the guidance of second-year head coach Grant McCasland, showcased a season of resilience, strategic prowess, and standout performances.

Finishing with an impressive 24–7 overall record and a 15–5 mark in the formidable Big 12 Conference, the Red Raiders secured a No. 9 national ranking and a coveted double-bye in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament.

Season Highlights

The Red Raiders’ journey was marked by several pivotal victories that underscored their competitive edge:

Dominant Home Finale: On March 6, 2025, Texas Tech hosted Colorado and delivered a commanding performance, winning 91–75. Sophomore forward JT Toppin was instrumental, recording 30 points and 14 rebounds. This victory not only highlighted Toppin’s offensive and defensive contributions but also solidified the team’s unblemished home record for the season.

Thrilling Overtime Triumph: The Red Raiders faced a significant test against the No. 6 Houston Cougars on February 24, 2025. In a nail-biting overtime contest, Texas Tech emerged victorious with an 82–81 win. This game snapped Houston’s 33-game home winning streak and underscored the Red Raiders’ resilience and ability to perform under pressure.

Regular Season Finale: Concluding their regular season on March 9, 2025, Texas Tech secured an 85–57 victory over Arizona State. Toppin’s 25 points and 11 rebounds marked his 14th double-double of the season, further cementing his status as a key player.

JT Toppin: A Season to Remember

Sophomore forward JT Toppin emerged as a linchpin for the Red Raiders. Averaging 18.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, Toppin’s consistent excellence earned him both the Big 12 Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year honors. His ability to dominate both ends of the court provided Texas Tech with a competitive advantage throughout the season.

Strategic Excellence Under Coach McCasland

Coach Grant McCasland’s emphasis on player health and strategic rest periods played a crucial role in the team’s success. By ensuring his players were well-rested and in optimal condition, McCasland prepared the Red Raiders for the grueling demands of the Big 12 schedule. This approach not only minimized injuries but also maximized on-court performance, particularly during high-stakes games.

Looking Ahead: Big 12 Tournament Aspirations

With their regular-season achievements securing them a double-bye, the Red Raiders are poised to make a deep run in the Big 12 Tournament. Their journey begins with a quarterfinal matchup against Baylor, a team they are familiar with and have prepared meticulously to face. The team’s focus remains on capturing their first Big 12 Tournament title, a feat that would further elevate their national standing and momentum heading into the NCAA Tournament.

Conclusion

The 2024–25 season has been a testament to Texas Tech’s dedication, strategic planning, and individual brilliance. As they transition into postseason play, the Red Raiders carry with them the lessons learned, the confidence built from key victories, and the leadership of standout players like JT Toppin. Fans and analysts alike eagerly anticipate how this momentum will translate into tournament success, with hopes high for a historic finish to an already remarkable season.
