Readers give Dispatch sports editor Brian White their takes on Ohio State football and more.

Ryan Day, the current head coach of Ohio State football, has often been compared to his predecessors, but a deeper look reveals striking similarities between him and the legendary Woody Hayes. Both coaches share a profound commitment to the Buckeyes, a relentless pursuit of excellence, and a vision that transcends the football field.

Woody Hayes, who led Ohio State from 1951 to 1978, is celebrated for his intense coaching style and his emphasis on a power-running game, famously described as “three yards and a cloud of dust.” Under his leadership, the Buckeyes secured five national championships and 13 Big Ten titles, cementing his legacy as one of college football’s greatest coaches.

Ryan Day, who took over the program in 2019, has demonstrated a similar drive for success. In a recent interview, Day expressed his aspirations, stating, “Woody Hayes is the last one to win multiple national championships at Ohio State. That’s something I’ve now set for myself. To be the next head coach to win multiple championships at Ohio State. There’s still a lot more to be done.”

This ambition reflects a mindset akin to Hayes’s relentless pursuit of victory. Day’s coaching record further underscores this parallel. With a 70-10 record and a national championship victory over Notre Dame, Day has solidified his place among Ohio State’s coaching elite.

Beyond their on-field achievements, both Hayes and Day have shown a deep commitment to their players’ personal development. Hayes was known for his mentorship, often emphasizing the importance of education and character. Similarly, Day has fostered a culture that balances high expectations with genuine care for his players. Defensive lineman Rob Landers noted, “He has a similar intensity [to Meyer], but his personality and his aura are more laid back and chill.”

Their shared focus on building a strong foundation is evident. Day often speaks about the importance of culture and efficiency, stating, “We have a culture. We work at it very hard. And we’re efficient at it.” This mirrors Hayes’s approach, who believed in instilling discipline and a strong work ethic in his teams.

Moreover, both coaches have faced and overcome significant challenges. Hayes’s tenure included intense rivalries and the pressures of maintaining a winning program. Day, too, has navigated criticism, especially following losses to Michigan. However, his resilience and ability to rally his team have been evident, particularly in their recent national championship run.

In essence, while separated by decades, Ryan Day and Woody Hayes share a common thread in their coaching philosophies. Their unwavering commitment to excellence, dedication to player development, and strategic acumen have not only defined their tenures but have also left an indelible mark on Ohio State football.
