Lamine Yamal Breaks Silence After Becoming Barcelona’s New No. 10 and Signing Long-Term Contract…read more…

Barcelona, Spain – July 17, 2025 — Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s rising star, has officially taken over the iconic No. 10 shirt, previously worn by legends like Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho, and marked the moment by signing a new long-term contract with the club. The 17-year-old sensation has now spoken publicly for the first time since the announcement, expressing both pride and responsibility as he embraces his new role at the heart of Barça’s future.

In a press conference held at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper training complex, Yamal appeared composed, mature, and fully aware of the weight that comes with the number. “It’s a dream come true,” he began. “Wearing the No. 10 shirt at FC Barcelona is not just a number. It’s a legacy. I’m proud, honored, and more motivated than ever to give everything for this club.”

Yamal’s contract extension, which ties him to Barcelona until June 2030, includes a staggering €1 billion release clause, underlining just how highly the club values him. The deal was finalized earlier this week and includes significant performance-based incentives.

A New Era Begins

Barcelona president Joan Laporta was quick to heap praise on the teenager. “Lamine represents the future of Barça,” Laporta said. “We are building a team around our young talents, and giving him the No. 10 shirt reflects our belief in his ability and character.”

The decision to hand the shirt to Yamal came after weeks of internal discussions at the club. While there were suggestions that the shirt should remain vacant or go to a more experienced player, the coaching staff and management agreed that Yamal’s maturity and connection with the club made him the ideal candidate.

“He’s earned it,” said Barça manager Hansi Flick. “Not only through his performances on the pitch, but through his work ethic, humility, and desire to improve every day.”

Yamal’s Meteoric Rise

Lamine Yamal made his senior debut for Barcelona in 2023 at just 15 years old, becoming the youngest debutant in club history. Since then, he has rapidly developed into one of Europe’s brightest young talents, already earning caps with the Spanish national team and dazzling fans with his dribbling, vision, and fearless attacking play.

In the 2024-25 season, he contributed 12 goals and 15 assists across all competitions, helping the team secure a second-place finish in La Liga and reach the semifinals of the Champions League.

Despite his youth, Yamal has consistently shown composure beyond his years. His performances in high-pressure matches — including the Clásico against Real Madrid and crucial Champions League knockout games — have won him comparisons to greats such as Messi and Neymar.

But Yamal is focused on carving his own path. “I don’t want to be the next Messi,” he said during the press conference. “There’s only one Messi. I want to be Lamine Yamal and make history in my own way. I know the No. 10 brings expectations, but I’ll use that pressure to push myself every day.”

Reactions Across the Football World

The football community responded swiftly to the news. Former Barça captain Andrés Iniesta commented on social media, writing: “A great honor for a great talent. The No. 10 is in good hands. Wishing you all the best, Lamine.”

Spain national team coach Luis de la Fuente also expressed confidence in the youngster. “Lamine has shown in both club and international play that he is ready for big responsibilities. This step will only make him stronger.”

Even Lionel Messi, now playing in the MLS with Inter Miami, reportedly sent a private message congratulating Yamal and encouraging him to “enjoy every moment in the shirt.”

What the No. 10 Means at Barça

The No. 10 jersey is more than just a number at FC Barcelona — it symbolizes brilliance, creativity, and leadership. From Diego Maradona and Romário to Ronaldinho and Lionel Messi, each wearer has left an indelible mark on the club’s history.

Following Messi’s departure in 2021, the shirt passed briefly to Ansu Fati, who struggled to consistently live up to the immense expectations and has since been loaned out. With Yamal, there is renewed hope and belief that the legacy can continue.

Former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o said in an interview: “Yamal has everything — the talent, the mentality, the Barça DNA. He can write his own chapter in the No. 10.”

Building for the Future

Barcelona’s focus on youth continues to be a central part of its strategy. With Yamal joining Pedri, Gavi, Pau Cubarsí, and Vitor Roque in the core group of young stars, the club is building a foundation for long-term success.

Flick emphasized that Yamal will be supported and protected. “We will not overburden him. Yes, he’s special, but he’s still learning. The important thing is to surround him with the right people, the right environment, and keep him grounded.”

Sporting director Deco added, “His contract reflects our long-term commitment. He is one of the best prospects in world football and we’re proud that he chose to grow here with us.”

The Season Ahead

Barcelona kicks off the 2025-26 season in mid-August, and expectations are high. Yamal is expected to be a key figure not only on the field but also as a symbol of the club’s renewed identity — a mix of homegrown talent, dynamic football, and youthful ambition.

Yamal, who turns 18 next month, concluded his media appearance with a message to fans: “I promise to work hard, stay humble, and make you proud. This is just the beginning.”

As the cameras flashed and the No. 10 shirt was held aloft, it was clear — a new chapter has begun at Barcelona, and it’s be

ing written by a boy who grew up dreaming in blaugrana.
