Florida gymnastics hit the mat in a tri-meet Sunday afternoon against West Virginia and No. 4 Utah.

In a thrilling tri-meet on January 10, 2025, the Florida Gators’ gymnastics team showcased their prowess by securing a narrow victory over Michigan State, Nebraska, and Northern Illinois at the Exactech Arena in Gainesville, Florida. The Gators achieved a final score of 196.675, edging out Michigan State’s 196.650, while Nebraska and Northern Illinois concluded with scores of 195.600 and 191.950, respectively.

Event Breakdown:

Vault: Florida commenced the meet on vault, earning a collective score of 49.200. Sophomore Danie Ferris delivered a standout performance, contributing significantly to the team’s total. Reflecting on her routine, Ferris remarked, “I tried to think about something we talk about a lot. It’s an opportunity to be there, to step up on that runway and have a chance to perform to show everybody what I can do.”

Uneven Bars: The Gators excelled on the uneven bars, posting a score of 49.325. Senior All-American Leanne Wong led the team with a stellar routine, contributing to the team’s overall performance. Wong expressed her gratitude, stating, “I’m really thankful for this opportunity to compete for the Gators again and just to start off strong this season.”

Balance Beam: Florida’s dominance was evident on the balance beam, where they achieved their highest event score of the night, a 49.500. The team’s precision and composure were on full display, underscoring their preparation and focus.

Floor Exercise: The Gators concluded the meet with the floor exercise, earning a score of 48.650. While slightly below their usual performance, the team’s earlier successes ensured their overall victory.

Coach’s Perspective:

Head Coach Jenny Rowland expressed pride in her team’s performance, stating, “It was great to be back in the O’Dome with Gator Nation. This team has worked really hard this preseason. Very intentional, very focused and there’s so much depth, so much talent on this team. It’s going to be a lot of fun being able to see new faces here and there and Gator Nation got a glimpse of that tonight.”

Looking Ahead:

The Gators are set to begin their Southeastern Conference (SEC) schedule with an upcoming meet against defending NCAA champion LSU on January 17, 2025, at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. This highly anticipated matchup will be broadcast on ESPN2, offering fans nationwide the opportunity to witness two gymnastics powerhouses in action.

Season Outlook:

Ranked No. 3 in the preseason Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association poll, Florida has demonstrated their commitment to excellence early in the season. With a blend of seasoned veterans and promising newcomers, the Gators are poised for a formidable campaign. Their recent performance underscores their potential to contend for top honors as the season progresses.

Conclusion:

The tri-meet victory serves as a testament to Florida’s depth, talent, and preparation. As the season unfolds, the Gators aim to build upon this momentum, striving for continued success and excellence in collegiate gymnastics.
