Connor Bedard, Macklin Celebrini, Lane Hutson Headline NHL’s Top Under-23 Talent Pool…see more…

As the NHL continues to evolve with a faster, more skill-driven style, the emergence of young talent under the age of 23 has become more critical than ever. In 2025, a new wave of elite players has taken center stage — and at the top of that list are Connor Bedard, Macklin Celebrini, and Lane Hutson.

These three standout names represent the vanguard of the league’s future. Each of them has made major strides early in their professional careers, showcasing not only raw talent but also a maturity and poise beyond their years. While the NHL has long been a league where veterans dominate, these under-23 stars are rapidly redefining expectations.

Connor Bedard: The Face of a New Era

When the Chicago Blackhawks selected Connor Bedard first overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, expectations were sky-high — and Bedard has delivered. Now entering his third NHL season, Bedard has lived up to the billing as a generational talent.

In his rookie campaign, he recorded 74 points (35 goals, 39 assists) in 76 games, earning the Calder Trophy and becoming one of the youngest players ever to lead his team in scoring. His shot is already considered among the league’s elite, and his hockey IQ, vision, and competitiveness have drawn comparisons to Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid.

What makes Bedard special isn’t just his stats — it’s his ability to take over games in crucial moments. At just 19 years old, he’s already a franchise cornerstone, the type of player who can anchor a team for the next decade. His leadership and commitment to improving every aspect of his game have further solidified his reputation.

Macklin Celebrini: Instant Impact

Another player with superstar potential is Macklin Celebrini, the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NHL Draft by the San Jose Sharks. Despite being only 18, Celebrini is already showing flashes of brilliance in his rookie season. Known for his two-way play, elite skating, and clutch scoring ability, Celebrini has earned comparisons to Patrice Bergeron — but with more offensive upside.

After dominating NCAA hockey with Boston University, where he was named the youngest-ever Hobey Baker Award winner, Celebrini transitioned seamlessly to the NHL. Early in his debut season, he’s averaging nearly a point per game and playing key minutes against top lines.

The Sharks, in the midst of a rebuild, have found their centerpiece. Celebrini brings a winning mentality and a strong work ethic, and his presence is already accelerating the team’s turnaround. If his trajectory continues, he may become one of the NHL’s most complete centers in the next few seasons.

Lane Hutson: Blue Line Dynamo

Often overlooked due to his size, Lane Hutson is proving that skill and hockey sense can overcome any perceived physical limitations. The Montreal Canadiens defenseman has dazzled fans and analysts alike with his offensive instincts and puck-moving abilities.

Drafted 62nd overall in 2022, Hutson developed rapidly at Boston University before making the jump to the NHL in 2024. In his first full season with Montreal, Hutson has emerged as one of the most dynamic young defensemen in the league, quarterbacking the power play and contributing significantly at even strength.

Hutson’s elite skating, deceptive shot, and confidence under pressure make him a standout on the Canadiens’ blue line. He currently leads all U-23 defensemen in points and is already being discussed as a future Norris Trophy candidate.

Supporting Cast of Rising Stars

While Bedard, Celebrini, and Hutson headline the list, they are far from alone. The NHL’s under-23 landscape is filled with incredible talent across all positions.

Adam Fantilli, now in his sophomore season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, has shown great promise as a physical, skilled forward capable of centering a top line. Logan Cooley of the Arizona Coyotes continues to grow as a fast-paced playmaker with elite vision and goal-scoring ability.

David Jiricek, a top defensive prospect, is developing into a reliable top-four defenseman with the Blue Jackets, while Luke Hughes of the New Jersey Devils is evolving into a force both offensively and defensively.

In goal, Jesper Wallstedt of the Minnesota Wild and Devon Levi of the Buffalo Sabres represent the next generation of elite NHL netminders. Though goalies typically take longer to develop, these young talents are beginning to show their potential on the big stage.

Youth Movement Taking Over the League

This influx of young, NHL-ready talent has led to a noticeable shift in team-building strategies. More franchises are trusting their prospects earlier and building around youth cores. The success of recent young stars like Bedard and Celebrini only encourages this trend.

The league has also become more accommodating to younger players stylistically. Rule changes and coaching philosophies have created an environment where speed, skill, and creativity are rewarded — all qualities these under-23 players excel in.

Moreover, international tournaments like the World Juniors and the U-20 World Championship have helped prepare this generation for the NHL spotlight. Many of these stars, like Bedard and Celebrini, have led their respective countries to medals on the international stage.

The Road Ahead

With such a promising pool of young talent, the future of the NHL looks brighter than ever. Connor Bedard is already a household name. Macklin Celebrini is poised to follow in his footsteps. Lane Hutson is rewriting what it means to be an elite defenseman in today’s game.

As the 2025-26 season unfolds, all eyes will be on these players. They are not just the future — they are the present. And if their current paths are any indication, th

ey will be defining the NHL for many years to come.
