TALLAHASSEE, FL – Legendary Florida State quarterback Charlie Ward has once again proven that his impact extends far beyond the football field.

In a surprise announcement on Monday morning, Ward revealed a $2.3 million donation to fund need-based scholarships at Florida State University, with a heartfelt explanation: the amount was chosen in honor of the year 1993, when Ward led the Seminoles to their first-ever national championship and became the first FSU player to win the Heisman Trophy.

“1993 was the year everything changed,” Ward said. “For me. For the school. For the fans. This gift is my way of turning that moment into something bigger than football — something that will live on through generations of students.”

The donation, made through the Charlie Ward Family Foundation, will endow The Ward Scholars Program, a fund designated for students from low-income backgrounds, especially those from underserved communities in Florida. The scholarship will cover full tuition, housing, books, and mentorship support for each recipient.

The university confirmed that the first 20 students will be selected to begin the program in fall 2025.

“Charlie Ward is the embodiment of what it means to be a Seminole,” said FSU President Richard McCullough. “His success, humility, and service are inspiring — and this generous act will change lives for decades to come.”

Ward, who went on to play in the NBA and is now a pastor, educator, and youth mentor, insisted the donation is not about legacy or headlines.

“I didn’t do this to be remembered,” he told a packed room at FSU’s College of Education. “I did this because I was remembered. I was guided, supported, and loved by people who believed in me. Now it’s my turn.”

Ward also shared that the idea came to him while speaking with a group of FSU students last year.

“One student asked me what my proudest year was. I said 1993, of course. But then I thought — what if I could make 2025 the best year for them?”

The scholarship fund will prioritize first-generation college students, student-athletes who don’t go pro, and those pursuing degrees in education, social work, and sports leadership.

“The game gave me a platform,” Ward said. “Now I’m giving it back in the form of opportunity.”
