In a major win for Tennessee baseball, Bowling Green standout catcher Garrett Wright has officially committed to join the Volunteers. The announcement marks a massive pickup for head coach Tony Vitello and his nationally recognized program, as Wright brings elite offensive production and defensive prowess to Knoxville.

Wright was one of the most dynamic players in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) during the 2025 season, slashing an impressive .406 at the plate with 48 RBIs. His consistency in the batter’s box made him a nightmare for opposing pitchers, while his leadership and game-calling ability behind the plate earned him MAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. The combination of a powerful bat and an elite defensive skillset makes Wright one of the most coveted catchers in the transfer portal this offseason.

For Tennessee, the addition of Wright bolsters a roster already brimming with talent and postseason ambition. After back-to-back deep runs in the NCAA Tournament, including a College World Series appearance, the Volunteers continue to attract top-tier talent, and Wright fits that mold perfectly. His presence solidifies the catcher position, providing experience, maturity, and a championship-caliber mindset that Vitello values deeply in his clubhouse.

“Garrett Wright is exactly the kind of player we look for—tough, smart, and unafraid of the big stage,” said one source close to the Tennessee staff. “He’s going to be a leader from day one.”

Defensively, Wright brings elite framing ability, quick pop times, and a strong arm, which helped him throw out over 40% of base stealers last season. His field awareness and pitcher-handling skills are widely respected, making him a complete catcher who can impact the game on both sides.

Wright’s decision comes as the transfer portal continues to reshape the college baseball landscape, where programs are increasingly building rosters through high-level additions like this. His move to the SEC—a conference known for its high-octane competition and pro-level talent—will give Wright the opportunity to showcase his skills on the biggest stage in college baseball. For MLB scouts, this transition offers a prime chance to evaluate him against elite pitching and advanced game scenarios, likely boosting his draft stock ahead of the 2026 MLB Draft.

At Bowling Green, Wright quickly became a cornerstone player, earning team MVP honors and helping elevate the program’s competitiveness in the MAC. His leadership qualities and work ethic were frequently praised by coaches and teammates alike, and those attributes are expected to carry over into his time with the Vols.

For Tennessee fans, this commitment is yet another sign that the program is not just maintaining its national presence—it’s actively improving. With Wright anchoring the pitching staff from behind the plate and delivering clutch hits at the dish, the Vols just became even more dangerous heading into the 2026 season.

Tennessee baseball just got a whole lot better—and the SEC has been officia

lly put on notice.
