Auburn Tigers News: Hugh Freeze on RB room, no. 1 edge plans official visit to AU…

In today’s edition of Auburn Tigers News, head coach Hugh Freeze addresses the running back room.

Auburn football continues to build momentum in the 2024 offseason, with head coach Hugh Freeze addressing key roster concerns while also making significant strides in recruiting. From managing his running back (RB) room to hosting a top-rated edge rusher for an official visit, the Tigers are positioning themselves for success in both the upcoming season and the future.

Hugh Freeze’s Strategy for the Running Back Room

One of Auburn’s strengths heading into 2024 is its running back corps, featuring proven talent and emerging playmakers. In a recent discussion, Freeze emphasized his plan to protect his top ball carriers during practices, ensuring they remain fresh and healthy for the season.

“I think I’m gonna put Jarquez [Hunter] and Damari [Alston] in yellow (non-contact) jerseys a good bit of the time,” Freeze said. “I don’t need to see them get a ton of reps in live situations.”

This approach makes sense, given that both Hunter and Alston have already demonstrated their capabilities on the field. Hunter, who has been Auburn’s lead back, rushed for 905 yards and seven touchdowns last season, showing an explosive combination of power and speed. Alston, a versatile back with strong upside, also made key contributions.

By limiting their contact in practice, Freeze aims to reduce the risk of injuries while still allowing younger players like Jeremiah Cobb and incoming freshmen to get valuable reps. Cobb, in particular, has been viewed as a rising talent and could see an increased workload this season.

Building a Powerful Running Attack

With Auburn placing an emphasis on the ground game, having a fresh and healthy running back room is crucial. The offensive line, which struggled in previous seasons, has been steadily improving under Freeze and his staff. This unit will be vital in creating running lanes for the Tigers’ stable of backs.

Auburn’s running attack has traditionally been a key component of its success. Last season, the Tigers averaged over 180 rushing yards per game, ranking among the top teams in the SEC in that category. With Hunter, Alston, and Cobb leading the way, Auburn is expected to lean on its rushing offense once again in 2024.

Top Edge Rusher Plans Official Visit to Auburn

Recruiting has been another area where Freeze has been making waves, and the Tigers are set to host one of the nation’s top defensive prospects. Hezekiah Harris, a highly sought-after edge rusher from Huntsville, Alabama, has confirmed his plans to visit Auburn for an official visit.

Harris, ranked as the No. 4 edge in the 2026 recruiting class and the No. 2 prospect in Alabama, has already received nearly 20 offers from top programs across the country. Auburn has made him a priority, and getting him on campus is a major step in the Tigers’ recruiting efforts.

Why Harris is a Big Deal for Auburn

At 6-foot-4 and 235 pounds, Harris possesses the ideal size and athleticism for an elite edge rusher. His quick first step, ability to shed blockers, and relentless pursuit of quarterbacks make him a nightmare for opposing offenses.

Auburn’s defense has been looking for more dominant pass rushers, and landing a player of Harris’s caliber would be a major boost for the program. The Tigers are competing with schools like Alabama, Georgia, and LSU for his commitment, but Auburn’s coaching staff has been aggressive in its pursuit.

During his visit, Harris is expected to meet with defensive line coach Jeremy Garrett and defensive coordinator Ron Roberts, who will likely emphasize Auburn’s defensive scheme and development track record. The Tigers’ coaching staff has already built strong relationships with Harris, which could give them an edge in his recruitment.

Auburn’s Defensive Vision Under Hugh Freeze

Freeze has made it clear that he wants Auburn’s defense to be aggressive and disruptive. Last season, the Tigers showed flashes of that potential but lacked consistency in pressuring quarterbacks. Adding a talent like Harris would help transform Auburn’s pass rush into one of the best in the SEC.
