Traditional national signing day passed quietly for Texas Tech football.

As the Texas Tech Red Raiders gear up for the 2025 football season, several key developments are shaping the team’s trajectory. With spring practices set to commence on March 10, leading up to the annual Spring Game on April 19 at Jones AT&T Stadium, the Red Raiders are poised to build on their recent successes.

Coaching Staff Enhancements

Head coach Joey McGuire has made significant additions to his coaching staff, notably securing defensive coordinator Shiel Wood from the University of Houston. Wood’s appointment comes with a lucrative three-year contract worth $3.96 million, underscoring Texas Tech’s commitment to strengthening its defensive strategies.

Player Departures and Returns

The offseason has seen notable player movements. Standout linebacker Jacob Rodriguez, a First Team All-Big 12 selection who led the conference with 72 solo tackles, announced his return for a final season, providing stability and experience to the defense.

Conversely, the team has experienced departures, including starting receivers Jerand Bradley and Myles Price, as well as starting left tackle Monroe Mills, who have entered the transfer portal. These exits present opportunities for emerging talents to step up during spring practices and fill the voids left by these key players.

Recruitment and Transfer Successes

Texas Tech has made headlines by assembling one of the nation’s top transfer classes. The Red Raiders welcomed 17 transfers and nine high school signees, bolstering their roster with experienced and fresh talent. This influx includes players like defensive back Dontae Balfour from Charlotte, who brings a wealth of experience to the secondary, and kicker Upton Bellenfant from Buffalo, poised to take over placekicking duties.

Spring Practice Objectives

With the commencement of spring practices, the coaching staff aims to integrate new players, assess positional battles, and implement strategic adjustments. The departure of key offensive players necessitates a focus on developing chemistry among the new receiving corps and solidifying the offensive line. Defensively, under Shiel Wood’s guidance, the emphasis will be on enhancing defensive schemes and ensuring seamless communication among players.

Looking Ahead

The 2025 season kicks off on August 30 with a home game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Jones AT&T Stadium. As the Red Raiders navigate the offseason, the combination of strategic coaching hires, a strong recruiting class, and the return of key players positions them favorably for the upcoming challenges. The forthcoming spring practices will be crucial in setting the foundation for a successful season, as Texas Tech aims to build upon its recent achievements and strive for greater heights in collegiate football.
