Former Georgia Bulldogs staff member Scott Cochran has been hired as the head coach of a collegiate football team

In a significant move within collegiate football, Dell McGee, a seasoned assistant coach from the University of Georgia (UGA), has been appointed as the head coach of Georgia State University (GSU). This transition marks a pivotal moment for both McGee and GSU, as they aim to elevate the Panthers’ football program to new heights.

A Storied Career at Georgia

Dell McGee’s coaching tenure at UGA spanned eight years, during which he served as the running backs coach and run game coordinator. His contributions were instrumental in the Bulldogs securing back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022. Under his guidance, UGA’s rushing attack flourished, producing four 1,000-yard rushers: Nick Chubb (2016-17), Sony Michel (2017), D’Andre Swift (2018-19), and Elijah Holyfield (2018). Notably, Chubb and Michel combined for over 8,400 yards and 87 touchdowns during their collegiate careers. McGee’s prowess in player development is further evidenced by the successful NFL careers of his protégés, including Chubb, Michel, Swift, James Cook, and Zamir White, all of whom were selected in the early rounds of the NFL Draft.

Recruiting Excellence

Beyond on-field coaching, McGee established himself as a formidable recruiter. In 2018, Rivals.com honored him as the National Recruiter of the Year after UGA secured the consensus No. 1 recruiting class. His efforts contributed to the Bulldogs’ impressive tally of 56 NFL draft picks from 2017 to 2023, including 15 first-round selections and an NFL-record 25 players drafted over the last two years.

Transition to Georgia State University

On February 23, 2024, Georgia State University announced Dell McGee as the fourth head football coach in the program’s history. He succeeds Shawn Elliott, who departed unexpectedly to join the coaching staff at South Carolina. GSU’s Athletic Director, Charlie Cobb, expressed confidence in McGee’s appointment, stating, “Coach McGee is an outstanding and authentic man with a strong passion for developing young men. His track record of competitive success at the high school and college levels makes me confident that he will lead our football program to its greatest achievements.”

A Vision for the Future

McGee’s coaching philosophy emphasizes player development, both on and off the field. Reflecting on his new role, he remarked, “Georgia State is primed for success.” His extensive experience in Georgia’s football landscape positions him well to tap into local talent and foster a culture of excellence within the Panthers’ program.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

While McGee’s appointment brings optimism, he faces the challenge of elevating a program that, despite making six bowl appearances in the last nine years, seeks greater consistency and prominence in collegiate football. His proven track record in coaching and recruitment will be crucial as he endeavors to build a competitive team capable of contending for championships.

A Homecoming of Sorts

A native of Columbus, Georgia, McGee’s return to his home state in a head coaching capacity is a full-circle moment in his career. His deep-rooted connections within Georgia’s football community are expected to bolster GSU’s recruiting efforts and strengthen ties with local high school programs.

Conclusion

Dell McGee’s transition from a pivotal role at UGA to the helm of GSU’s football program signifies a new chapter for both parties. With a foundation of success and a vision for the future, McGee is poised to lead the Panthers toward a new era of achievement in collegiate football.
