The Ohio State Buckeyes have long been celebrated for their prowess on the football field, but recent achievements highlight their dedication to academic excellence as well.
In the fall of 2024, the team not only clinched the national championship but also saw several players earn prestigious academic honors, underscoring the program’s commitment to developing well-rounded student-athletes.
Academic All-American Honors
Three standout players—Donovan Jackson, Seth McLaughlin, and Quinshon Judkins—were named Academic All-Americans, a testament to their exceptional performance both on the field and in the classroom. This recognition is awarded to student-athletes who maintain high academic standards while contributing significantly to their teams.
Donovan Jackson: Transitioning from guard to tackle late in the season, Jackson played a pivotal role in the Buckeyes’ offensive success, helping the team average 36.3 points per game during the playoffs. Off the field, he boasts a 3.68 GPA and has been named Academic All-Big Ten three times. Jackson graduated in December 2024 with a degree in sport industry.
Seth McLaughlin: As a key component of the offensive line, McLaughlin’s contributions were instrumental in the team’s championship run. His dedication to academics earned him a spot alongside Jackson as an Academic All-American.
Quinshon Judkins: Judkins’ performance as a running back was complemented by his academic achievements, securing his place among the honored student-athletes.
Academic All-Big Ten Recognitions
In addition to individual accolades, the Buckeyes had a significant number of players recognized as Academic All-Big Ten honorees. This distinction requires student-athletes to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. In December 2023, 37 players received this honor, including ten starters such as Emeka Egbuka, Marvin Harrison Jr., TreVeyon Henderson, and Donovan Jackson.
The previous year, in December 2022, 39 players were named Academic All-Big Ten, highlighting the program’s consistent emphasis on academic achievement.
Program-Wide Academic Commitment
Under the leadership of head coach Ryan Day, Ohio State’s football program has emphasized the importance of academic success. In May 2021, the team was honored by the Varsity O Alumni Society with the “most improved large team grade point average” award, reflecting the program’s dedication to fostering an environment where athletes can excel academically.
Balancing Athletics and Academics
The Buckeyes’ recent accomplishments illustrate the program’s holistic approach to student development. By prioritizing both athletic excellence and academic integrity, Ohio State ensures that its players are well-prepared for success beyond the football field.
As the Buckeyes continue to build on their legacy, their dual commitment to winning championships and fostering academic growth serves as a model for collegiate athletic programs nationwide.
