Legendary Pink Floyd guitarist and vocalist David Gilmour is returning to the spotlight with a powerful new project that bridges the visual and sonic realms. Gilmour has officially announced Luck and Strange: The Concert Film, an immersive IMAX experience paired with a live album capturing his upcoming solo performances in support of his forthcoming studio album Luck and Strange. This marks his first full-length studio effort in nearly a decade, and fans across the globe are preparing for what promises to be one of the year’s most captivating musical events.

The IMAX concert film, scheduled for exclusive global screenings in September, will feature footage from Gilmour’s multi-night residency at the historic Royal Albert Hall in London. These performances are expected to include both new material from Luck and Strange and classic selections from his Pink Floyd and solo catalogs. The combination of the theatrical film release and live album launch represents a major artistic milestone for Gilmour, who has rarely embraced such multimedia formats to this extent.

“It’s about connection,” Gilmour said in a statement accompanying the announcement. “The connection between the music, the space we play it in, the people experiencing it together—and the visuals we can now create to elevate it all. This project has been years in the making, and I wanted it to be something more than just a concert film. It’s a moment.”

Luck and Strange, his first studio album since 2015’s Rattle That Lock, features contributions from frequent collaborators including keyboardist Jon Carin, bassist Guy Pratt, and drummer Steve DiStanislao. The record is also notable for including lyrics penned by novelist and Gilmour’s wife, Polly Samson, continuing the creative partnership that’s shaped much of his solo work since the 1990s. The new songs explore themes of aging, memory, and artistic legacy—subjects that resonate deeply with both longtime fans and a new generation of listeners.

While Gilmour’s return to the stage and screen is noteworthy on its own, the use of IMAX technology adds a fresh dimension to his work. According to the production team behind the film, the project was shot using cutting-edge 4K cameras and Dolby Atmos sound design to provide a fully immersive experience. Concertgoers will not only hear Gilmour’s rich guitar tones and emotive vocals, but also be transported to the heart of the live performance—feeling the weight of each note, the intimacy of the venue, and the scale of the visuals.

“To see this kind of performance on an IMAX screen, with that kind of sound clarity, is something fans have never really experienced from Gilmour before,” said director Gavin Elder, who has worked with Gilmour on previous live releases. “We wanted to make something that honors the music but also feels like art on its own terms. Every camera angle, every lighting decision, every projection was carefully considered.”

Tickets for the IMAX screenings will go on sale in mid-August, with theaters across North America, Europe, and parts of Asia confirmed to participate. The screenings are expected to be limited, with only a handful of showings per city, making the event one of the more exclusive releases of the year.

In addition to the film, a live album titled Luck and Strange: Live at the Royal Albert Hall will be released digitally and physically the same week as the screenings. The tracklist reportedly includes standout new songs such as “Between Two Points,” “The Echoing Silence,” and the titular “Luck and Strange,” as well as fresh interpretations of Pink Floyd classics like “Wish You Were Here” and “Comfortably Numb.” Gilmour’s reinterpretation of these older tracks—many of which have not been played live in years—are expected to be highlights of both the film and album.

Fans and critics alike are expressing high anticipation for the release. Social media lit up with reactions following the announcement, with hashtags like #LuckAndStrangeFilm and #DavidGilmourIMAX trending across platforms. Many praised Gilmour’s willingness to embrace modern formats while maintaining the emotional depth and musical integrity that has defined his career for over five decades.

“David Gilmour doesn’t put things out just to make noise,” said longtime music critic Helen Partridge. “Every release is considered, deeply layered, and beautifully executed. This isn’t just nostalgia—it’s a living artist expanding what a concert can be.”

Indeed, Gilmour’s career has always balanced the nostalgic pull of Pink Floyd’s legacy with a forward-looking creative spirit. Whether through his groundbreaking guitar work, commitment to sonic experimentation, or personal songwriting evolution, Gilmour remains a singular voice in rock history.

His return comes at a time when many artists from the classic rock era are retiring from the road. Yet Gilmour, now in his late seventies, continues to push boundaries. The IMAX film is not only a gift to fans but also a statement about how music, art, and technology can intertwine to keep live performance relevant and transformative in the 21st century.

Luck and Strange: The Concert Film will premiere worldwide on September 13, with limited screenings through the end of the month. The accompanying live album will be released on September 14 via Sony Music. Pre-orders for vinyl, CD, and digital formats are now open on Gilmour’s official website, where fans can also sign up for early access to IMAX ticketing.

With a masterwork of visual and musical storytelling on the horizon, David Gilmour is once again inviting listeners into his world—one note, one lyric, and one unfo

rgettable moment at a time.
